It successfully wipes the UUID and the MAC address of the VM image generated before the VM started for the first time, where they will be newly randomly generated. If I didn't wipe them, then when I spin up 2 guest VMs, they share the /etc/machine-id which is problematic. I want to "duplicate" this mic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR: don't fuck with pam-usb

   submitted by /u/Sudden_Watermelon
[link] [comments]

Accidentally locked myself out after fiddling with pam-usb

I just installed it the regular way, I followed all instructions and installed my desktop environment, but when I finally reboot, it just displays this, and I am freaking out.

https://imgur.com/a/prqef7G

   submitted by /u/RealShadowRBLX
[link] [comments]

Installed Arch Linux but ran into issue

I use
arch-thinkpad 6.1.7-arch1-1
on
Lenovo x390 yoga
with
Intel WhiskeyLake-U GT2 [UHD Graphics 620]
. My @home is empty in all snapshots.

I reboot to a liveUSB (now).

I looked through my files in my home directory, and found:

All files in folders controlled by me (ex. ~/* excluding dotfolders and Desktop, Downloads, etc.) were left untouched

Some dotfiles and folders present on my initial install in ~/.config and ~/.local/share were modified at 12:17pm. Based on my fish_history, the last commands made were ones I did a while ago (6+ months) when I configured snapper.

Some dotfolders and files were left untouched, like those not on my system when I configured snapper. All KDE dotfiles in .config were “reset.” However, those in .local/kde were left alone.

As of now it appears my @/ folder was left 100% alone, except for files that interact with dotfiles in the home user folder.

Is there any way to debug this issue, and see why these files were wiped? But personally I like it to look clean, and for there to be as little as possible before I reach the desktop, also with autologin enabled, just for OCD reasons I suppose. I use an NVME SSD on Asrock b450m Pro4 motherboard and the combination isn't lighting fast but sufficient enough for a 6 year old computer. Using the methods described on the wiki here, these are the kernel parameters I use to achieve a "silent boot" on my system with Arch GNOME Wayland and GDM and GRUB:
loglevel=0 udev.log_level=0 vt.global_cursor_default=0 console=tty2
. And I also set
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
. By using this method, the only text I see when booting after Asrock splash screen is a simple and very fast "Booting Arch Linux" followed by one or two flashes of black for about 3 seconds, varying depending on if I use xorg or Wayland. It's fine, but I know it could be better. systemd-analyze doesn't show me anything out of order and I don't have many services running, so I'm wondering where else I could cut some corners for boot time.

Before doing the above method I recall Arch showing me several screens with several methods including something along the lines of "Starting Arch systemd version 252 /dev/nvme etc etc" and a couple of other systemD messages, and it also "flashed black" a few more times as well. Are there any other methods of increasing boot time or "smoothing" the process out that I'm unaware of? I've heard of Plymouth but I'm not familiar enough to just jump into it, I like to understand what I'm installing before using the AUR.

For years I have been trying to get my Arch boot process to "behave" like Solus OS, which famously boots lighting fast. Even with the above kernel parameters to achieve "silent boot" it doesn't feel as seamless of a startup on other distros. This is sort of a follow up to an older post here somewhere, "The quest to boot as fast as Solus does." (which was described by a mod as "useful theory crafting" despite getting reported for spam, rip.) This distro itself I do not recommend whatsoever, but I'd like to just figure out how such an immediate, smooth feeling boot on Solus is possible. The team credits it to a vague technology called "Celtic Magic". I press the power button and see my cursor faster than any other desktop OS I've ever used, and with 0 disruptions or messages or video initialization wonkiness etc. Why is it that no other distro boots this quickly? Where can I explore how to achieve this on Arch? I believe they use CLR Boot Manager, personally I'm only familiar with grub & systemd-boot.

The biggest jump in boot time I've experienced of course was switching from HDD to SSD. Everything at least 3 times faster. There was another slight increase when switching to NVME, but not as significant as HDD > SSD. And of course disabling Fast Boot option in UEFI that's on by default for Windows-based machines. Anyway I'm curious, what's your boot time? I know it's an arbitrary thing really but it just interests me. From a press of the power button Arch with GNOME takes me 18-20 seconds to boot, Solus takes about 15-16 seconds, Ubuntu takes about 25 seconds, Windows about 30 seconds, Fedora a whopping 50+ seconds.

   submitted by /u/New-Step6205
[link] [comments]

Exploring "silent boot" / "boot time"

A small PSA, just in case it can help people out, because I know there's a bunch of people having the same issue from the bug reports.

I've been using a 5700XT since it's release in 2019, and over the last year and a half I've been having some issues. If this sounds familiar keep reading.

If you are having this issue, it's likely that your GPU is resetting, and
xorg
(or
wayland
AFAIK) can't overcome this. Your best bet is to try to figure out how to avoid those resets, but the problem is that there's no easy way to play with the gpu parameters from arch (that I've been able to find).

I have a dual boot setup because of my work, so I booted Windows and played with the Catalyst software, undervolting seems to be the main issue for stability, but my GPU was unstable from stock. I started by installing and running chkrootkit, which found nothing but a false positive (substitution on a line in a file that doesn't exist). The output is pretty verbose and I've never used it before but I didn't see anything awry. Take note of this line:

Syslogk:Searching for Syslogk LKM rootkit... nothing found

A few minutes later, I was browsing my home directory and found a file named "1" in /home.
cat ~/1
returns the following:

/syslogk

chkrootkit apparently didn't find Syslogk on my system--and I couldn't find it myself using these instructions. That raises the question, "Why is chkrootkit creating this file?"

I removed the (write-protected) file and ran it another time. I checked journalctl and it looks like the chkrootkit process creates the file (again) by calling systemd-homed. I will update this if I found stuff that does not work.

Heythere.

I am using arch as my main os for years now and always had a Win10 install on a second disk on both of my devices (for gaming mostly). One uses GRUB for legacy reasons, the other one uses systemd-boot (I wouldn't mind getting rid of GRUB but there was no need so far). The time has come to upgrade to Windows 11 which seems to require secure boot to receive updates properly.

It seems that I could just disable secure boot every time I want to boot into arch but I really don't want to do that 1-2 times a day.

Now I got lost in the UEFI secure boot wiki page. If I understand section 5.1 (sbctl) correctly, I would just enable secure boot, execute the commands stated there and be able to boot my arch kernel via systemd-boot as well as my windows 11 install since
sbctl enroll-keys -m
would also enroll the keys issued by MS? Are those static? No need to download them from my BIOS?

The steps mentioned in section 3 are more or less the manual way of doing what sbctl is doing right? The pacman hook would then re-sign everything when updating. Do I need to worry about Windows updates breaking things? If I understand secure boot correctly, no one can alter the enrolled keys as long as I don't go into "secure boot setup mode" in the BIOS setup again, right? So that would be fine.

sbctl does require systemd-boot, right?

Sorry, I got quite confused after reading section 3 and those nice red warnings about how I could easily brick my mainboard...

   submitted by /u/rkost
[link] [comments]

Help me understand secure boot for the sake of dual booting windows 11

I tried changing my keyboard layout through gnome's layout settings. I get a similar locale output:

locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TIME=en_DK.UTF-8 LC_COLLATE=C.UTF-8 LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ALL=

   submitted by /u/epic_window
[link] [comments]

Problems with newline character rendering as question mark glyphs in terminal

I have my .xinitrc file set up to open a alacritty terminal window with xmonad but when I open another terminal window it doesnt open an alacritty window, instead it opens a xterm window.
