Today we are discussing...</p> <h2>Aokana: Four Rhythm Across the Blue</h2> <p>With the invention of anti-gravitational shoes known as Grav-Shoes, the ability to fly freely has become an everyday experience for the people inhabiting a four-island archipelago south of Japan. This invention has brought the people new ways of living and also a new sport known as &quot;Flying Circus,&quot; where participants gain points by either touching floating buoys or their opponent&#39;s back.</p> <p>The gullible and clumsy Asuka Kurashina, newly transferred to Kunahama High School, enters this world of flight unknowingly when she is able to pull off a difficult maneuver the first time she participates in a Flying Circus match. Eventually, this leads her to join her school’s Flying Circus club. Led by their coach, Masaya Hinata, their members consist of the experienced Misaki Tobisawa and her overprotective friend, Mashiro Arisaka. Both have their popular works over the past few years and happens to work with A-1 Pictures and Cloverworks so I think it&#39;s interesting to see their quotes.</p> <p>One is from <a href="https://anilist.co/staff/102268/Kanta-Kamei">Kanta Kamei</a> (director: <em>SaeKano series, OreShura, Usagi Drop</em>), <a href="https://twitter.com/kantakamei/status/1617361507846852609?cxt=HHwWgsDQyZzugvIsAAAA">who wrote today about his comments</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/kantakamei/status/1617372057666453504?cxt=HHwWgIDQ7abUh_IsAAAA">to an Aniplex producer some time ago</a>: </p> <p>(note, secondary translation)</p> <blockquote> <p>Some time ago I talked with an Aniplex producer, &quot;Maybe you all should stop putting up new anime in January/Winter season? All those staff are going to be burnt out over the New Year holidays and they would not be able to enjoy the time off. And (if you are giving out those outsourcing works to China) it&#39;s Lunar New Year in February <em>(note by me: or late January - this year the day fell on yesterday)</em> and people there aren&#39;t working around then either.&quot;. My comments were rejected.</p> </blockquote> <p>&#x200B;</p> <blockquote> <p>Regarding production outsourcing (to China) around LNY, one of those animation studio producers lamented to me that &quot;we tried offering 5 times the usual pay for a single cut around that time and no-one picked it up&quot;. Well then, it&#39;s important holidays/off time for them after all. And that means even if we give out 3 or 5 times the payment for finishing up the last few remaining cuts, no-one&#39;s gonna finish them on those days.</p> </blockquote> <p>&#x200B;</p> <p>The other comes from <a href="https://www.dailyshincho.jp/article/2022/12301041/">a magazine interview a month ago</a> with <a href="https://anilist.co/staff/105801/Tomohiko-Itou">Tomohiko Itou</a>, renowned director of <em>Sword Art Online</em> from season 1 to <em>Ordinal Scale</em> and also director for the likes of <em>Erased, HELLO WORLD &amp; The Millionaire Detective - Balance: UNLIMITED</em>. His interview touches a lot more than just anime production issues (hopefully someone can give out an English translation) but here are some interesting points of note:</p> <p>(again, secondary translations here)</p> <ul> <li>He said that he heard A-1 Pictures&#39; CEO (<a href="https://anilist.co/staff/161769/Shinichirou-Kashiwada">Shinichirou Kashiwada</a>, who was for a long time producer at JC STAFF before moving to A-1P) stepped down last November to take responsibility for the 1 month release delay of the <a href="https://anilist.co/anime/140999/---/">latest</a> <em>Sword Art Online: Progressive</em> movie. <em>(my note: so there WAS indeed some fall-outs to recent delays for A-1P/Aniplex titles like SAO:P or Eighty-Six, but that doesn&#39;t really solves the problem)</em></li> <li><em>Lycoris Recoil</em> (which Itou contributed on 1 episode, plus director <a href="https://anilist.co/staff/110189/Shingo-Adachi">Shingo Adachi</a> was a long time work partner with Itou) was 3 seasons late airing compared with original plans (i.e. it was original forecasted as a <strong>Fall 2021</strong> show)</li> <li>Aniplex has a problem of too many titles in work at hand AND they have high standards of quality on the finished products. Unfortunately not every other animation studios out there can meet such demands so quite a few ended up being stuck onto the hands of A-1 Pictures.</li> <li>Itou commented that &quot;It&#39;s easy to understand why titles like <em>Demon Slayer,</em> with enough money, enough time and an abundance of first rate staff at hand, could end up such a great finished product. However if you only rely on the production side&#39;s over-diligence to produce something like KnY, this is unreasonable, because you simply don&#39;t have the basis and staff to do so.&quot;</li> </ul> <p>With quite a few Aniplex productions facing lengthy public delays in recent months (<em>Nier Automata</em> and <em>Ayakashi Triangle</em> indefinitely delayed, perhaps way after this winter; the boys idol show <em>UniteUp</em> delayed for 2 weeks; <em>The Misfit of Demon King Academy S2</em> rumored to face delays as well; <em>Fate/Strange Fake</em> 1-episode special slips from New Years&#39; Eve to summer 2023; previously mentioned problems with <em>Eighty-Six</em>/<em>Sword Art Online Progressive</em> movie etc.) - all blamed on COVID (<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/10hts4l/comment/j5adewt/">which as I commented is &quot;not wrong&quot; but extremely far from the whole story</a>), it&#39;s quite a sight to see the biggest players in this industry like Sony blundering like this after being (not the first, and not the last time either) so short-sighted in the production sense.</p> <p>We all wondered when will the anime industry become dead. LiveCry here, aka the guy who has one of the top 10 posts of all time in <a href="/r/mahjong">r/mahjong</a> and the guy who hosted an ok rewatch of Welcome to the NHK two and a half years ago. I&#39;m now graduated, in the real world, and have way less free time than I did back in college. So what better time than now to try my hand at hosting another rewatch? </p> <h2>Who is this Pretender and What makes him Great?</h2> <p><a href="https://myanimelist.net/anime/40052/Great_Pretender">Great Pretender</a> is an anime original, Summer 2020 release from a niche indie studio called Wit. It follows the misadventures of Makoto Edamura, a career criminal making a living in Japan by scamming, scheming, and swindling. One day, after pickpocketing another seemingly clueless tourist, he finds himself on the run from the police. To make matters worse, that &quot;clueless&quot; tourist had somehow tricked Edamura out of his precious spoils from earlier! </p> <p>In a twist of fate, the empty-pocketed Edamura and the tourist would reunite during the escape from the law. Turns out that the tourist, Laurent, was another con man all along! Furthermore, this reunion would lead Edamura to following Laurent to the United States, where he would find himself roped into a contest to prove his worth as a con artist and hold on to his (self-proclaimed) title as &quot;Japan&#39;s Greatest Swindler.&quot; But, as the MAL description says, he would soon realize that working with Laurent would be more than what he bargained for... </p> <h2>What is this Pretender and Why is he Great?</h2> <p>Great Pretender has a cast of interesting and colorful characters and a story that, while not super deep, is engaging and fun. The art style and color choices work wonderfully and give the show a unique feel, at least in my eyes. Additionally, as you&#39;ll see, I think they incorporate the international aspect of the show very well. The OST is excellent and at times quite jazzy (not always, but a fair bit), and I&#39;ve seen that part compared to that of Cowboy Bebop. Speaking of Cowboy Bebop, here are some shows that have similarities with Great Pretender: </p> <ul> <li><p>Cowboy Bebop: Besides the OST thing, the basic stories of the shows are fairly similar - adventures revolving around a team of expressive characters, focus on illicit activites, and traveling around the world (ok, space traveling for Cowboy Bebop, but you get my point). </p></li> <li><p>Baccano!: Again, jazzy OST, colorful characters, illicit activities, etc. Great Pretender is not nearly as bloody as Baccano and is missing the supernatural element, but overall fairly similar vibes. Baccano! is one of my all-time favorite shows, so it makes sense that I also really enjoy Great Pretender. </p></li> <li><p>Black Lagoon: Probably the closest comparison to Great Pretender story-wise from what I can tell - admittedly I have not seen Black Lagoon myself, but you&#39;ve got the MC being thrown into an over-their-heads situation with a group of criminals and having to partake in crazy and illicit missions. <sup>Damn,</sup> <sup>looks</sup> <sup>like</sup> <sup>I</sup> <sup>missed</sup> <sup>the</sup> <sup>rewatch</sup> <sup>on</sup> <sup>this</sup> <sup>one</sup> <sup>by</sup> <sup>a</sup> <sup>few</sup> <sup>months...</sup> <sup>to</sup> <sup>the</sup> <sup>PTW</sup> <sup>list</sup> <sup>it</sup> <sup>goes.</sup> </p></li> </ul> <hr/> <p><em>♫ Yeah ooh hoo</em><br/> <em>Too real when I feel what my heart can&#39;t conceal ♫</em> </p> <hr/> <h2>Why is this Pretender and Where is he Great?</h2> <p>Great Pretender is readily available on <a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81220435#:%7E:text=2020%20%7C%20Maturity%20Rating%3ATV%2D,Watch%20all%20you%20want.">Netflix</a> for your viewing pleasure, at least in the US. To my knowledge, there are no other (legal) streaming options. </p> <p>Side note, but in my opinion, this show has a fantastic English dub if you&#39;re willing to give that a shot. The sub is great as well, of course... just a suggestion. </p> <h2>Where is this Pretender and When will he be Great?</h2> <p>Well first and foremost, we&#39;ll have to see how much interest this thread generates. But assuming we get a good amount, my plan was to kick off on <strong>March 1st at 5:00pm EST (22:00 UTC)</strong> and go at a pace of one episode per day, with a potential discussion day after the first half (we can discuss about including this or not) and a post-watch discussion at the end.
