Well, this has been annoying for me personally and I'm hoping to cut down the posts like that with this stickied post.

I'm gathering all of these comments from posts in the subreddit and I may decide to turn this into a Wiki Page but for now it is a stickied post. :)

How to learn ___. Where can I learn ___?

Most coding languages can be learned at W3Schools or CodeAcademy. Those are just 2 of the most popular places. If you know of others, feel free to post them in the comments below and I will edit this post to include them and credit you. :)

Should I learn to code?

Yes, everyone should know the basics. Not only are computers taking over the world (literally) but the internet is reaching more and more places everyday. On top of that, coding can help you learn how to use Microsoft Word or Apple Pages better. You can learn organization skills (if you keep your code organized, like myself) as well as problem solving skills. So, there are very few people who would ever tell you no that you should not learn to code.

DO IT. JUST DO IT.

Can I use an iPad/Tablet/Laptop/Desktop to learn how to code?

Yes, yes you can. It is more difficult to use an iPad/Tablet versus a Laptop or Desktop but all will work. You can even use your phone. Though the smaller the device, the harder it is to learn but you can. All you need to do (at the very basic) is to read about coding and try writing it down on a piece of paper. Then when you have a chance to reach a computer, you can code that and test your code to see if it works and what happens. So, go for it!

Is ___ worth learning?

Yes, there is a reason to learn everything. This goes hand in hand with "Should I learn to code?". The more you know, the more you can do with your knowledge. Yes, it may seem overwhelming but that is okay. Start with something small and get bigger and bigger from there.

How do I start coding/programming?

We have a great section in our Wiki and on our sidebar that helps you out with this. First you need the tools. Once you have the tools, come up with something you want to make. Write down your top 3 things you'd like to create. After that, start with #1 and work your way down the list. It doesn't matter how big or small your ideas are. If there is a will, there is a way. You will figure it out. If you aren't sure how to start, we can help you. Just use the flair [Other Code] when you post here and we can tell you where you should start (as far as what programming language you should learn).

You can also start using Codecademy or places like it to learn how to code.
You can use Scratch.

Point is, there is no right or wrong way to start. We are all individuals who learn at our own pace and in our own way. All you have to do is start.

What language should I learn first?

It depends on what you want to do. Now I know the IT/Programming field is gigantic but that doesn't mean you have to learn everything. Most people specialize in certain areas like SQL, Pearl, Java, etc. Do you like web design? Learn HTML, CSS, C#, PHP, JavaScript, SQL & Linux (in any order). Do you like application development? Learn C#, C++, Linux, Java, etc. (in any order). No one knows everything about any one subject. Most advanced people just know a lot about certain subjects and the basics help guide them to answer more advanced questions. It's all about your problem solving skills.

How long should it take me to learn ___?

We can't tell you that. It all depends on how fast you learn. Some people learn faster than others and some people are more dedicated to the learning than others. Some people can become advanced in a certain language in days or weeks while others take months or years. Depends on your particular lifestyle, situation, and personality.

---------------------------------------------

There are the questions. if you feel like I missed something, add it to the comments below and I will update this post. I hope this helps cut down on repeat basic question posts.

Previous Post with more Q&A in comments here: https://www.reddit.com/r/CodingHelp/comments/t3t72o/repost_of_how_to_learn_where_can_i_learn_should_i/

   submitted by /u/DudeThatsErin
[link] [comments]

REPOST OF: How to learn ___. Is there a course, website, or anything that lets me drill a specific problem over and over again? Example. I was learning about forms, inputs, and labels in html and when the video was over they gave a proactive problem but only ONE practice problem. And if I got it right I could just refresh it and itd still be the same problem. I feel that drilling a particular aspect of a language helps Engrain it better like practicing multiplication in math or playing basketball and you shoot a 1000 free throws over and over again until youre ready to play an actual game. Is there any resource out there that can help with that? Any Info would be appreciated!!

   submitted by /u/andre3213
[link] [comments]

What resource is available to practice a specific aspect of coding over and over again?

How many hours of coding practice, until I can make a legit app?

   submitted by /u/SpreadsheetJesus69
[link] [comments]

How many hours of coding practice, until I can make a legit app?

Hello CodingHelp,

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask, however I would like some career advice please. I'll be using these logs to generate pattern analysis for events during certain weather conditions and such. The problem I'm having is figuring out if a relational db is the way to go on this as I would never create any of those associations alone, they will always be through a report so it will be just one long transaction. Am I wrong in thinking that using something like Mongo here would be a better choice? I'm assuming the pro of using a relational here would actually be the analysis queries as i'm not sure how a nosql does for that type of stuff (i've never used a nosql) but if its the right choice here I would be happy to learn it for my own self dev. Im a beginner, and this is a project Ive been doing just for fun. The code is:

https://pastebin.com/Z6a8iMw7

It is basically a game with a menu, a saving option and an error handler. Everything works fine, except for the errhandler function. It makes sure you dont input a value that does not correspond with an action in game. It requires 10 input (it requires so much because maybe in the future the game will have many options to choose, so I wanted to be prepared for that), checks if it is a legal value and if its not exits the game. int i1 is the value that corresponds to the one obtained as an input from choosing the option in game, saved in save[i-1]. I filled the unused slots with a repeating legal value (explaining all the 0s). Apparently even if I inject invalid values in save[i-1] by selecting options in-game the function wont stop the game, as if the value was legal. I tried using &save[i-1] as input to the function and it works, so I think Im injecting the value into the function in a wrong way. Can someone help me? You would help me to have a better sleep tonight haha. I've tried changing the while to

fgets(buffer, MAX_LINELENGTH, fpointer)

But I didn't help.

This is what I'm working with right now:

void ocorrencias(int col){ float grade1, grade2, grade3, check; int int1 = 0; int int2 = 0; int int3 = 0; int int4 = 0; FILE *fpointer; if(fpointer == NULL){ printf("ERROR!"); } fpointer = fopen("grades.csv","r"); // while(fgets(buffer, 100, fpointer) != NULL){ while(!feof(fpointer)){ if(col == 1){ fscanf(fpointer,"%f, %f, %f, %f", &grade1, &grade2, &grade3, &check); //compare(grade1, int1, int2, int3, int4); if(grade1 >= 0 && grade1 <= 2.99){ int1++; //occurrence 1 } else if(grade1 >= 3.00 && grade1 <= 4.99){ int2++; //occurrence 2 } else if(grade1 >= 5.00 && grade1 <= 7.99){ int3++; //occurrence 3 } else if(grade1 >= 8.00 && grade1 <= 10.00){ int4++; //occurrence 4 } } if(col == 2){ fscanf(fpointer,"%f, %f, %f, %f", &grade1, &grade2, &grade3, &check); compare(grade2, int1, int2, int3, int4); } if(col == 3){ fscanf(fpointer,"%f, %f, %f, %f", &grade1, &grade2, &grade3, &check); compare(grade3, int1, int2, int3, int4); } if(col == 4){ fscanf(fpointer,"%f, %f, %f, %f", &grade1, &grade2, &grade3, &check); compare(check, int1, int2, int3, int4); } } print(int1, int2, int3, int4); fclose(fpointer); }

Only did the ifs for column 1, for testing.

and the txt file:

2.50,3.00,3.00,0 2.50,2.50,3.00,0 3.50,4.00,5.00,0 7.50,7.00,7.50,0 3.00,5.00,5.00,0 7.50,7.50,7.50,0 6.00,6.00,5.50,0 3.00,2.50,3.00,0 8.00,9.00,9.50,0 7.00,7.50,7.50,0

the output I'm getting is:

2 3 5 1

(occurrence 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively).

   submitted by /u/Yudiaramos
[link] [comments]

Program Reads last line of file twice in C
