Being one of the more controversial subs on reddit, it’s more important here than most that reports are monitored regularly so that offending posts and comments are removed in a timely fashion. Our philosophy against censorship is at ever-increasing odds with reddit’s philosophy of making advertising money through banning content that advertisers don’t like — they’re always looking for reasons to shut us down, and it’s critical to our continued existence that we don’t give them reason to do so. Having a larger mod team that can remove problematic content expeditiously is key to that continued existence.</p> <p>To that end, we are excited to announce that we are officially opening up <a href="/r/antinatalism">r/antinatalism</a> mod applications! We have a thriving community of antinatalists of all ages, races, religions, philosophies, countries (…and time zones!) that generate more antinatalist discussion every day than was created every year before the advent of the internet — that discussion needs your help :)</p> <p>A little bit about the ideal moderators and moderatoresses we are looking for:</p> <ul> <li>We welcome debate and opinions, even when problematic or controversial. We believe that the best way to defeat bad beliefs and opinions is to disarm them through reason, not censorship. We’re opposed to censorship beyond what is absolutely, positively necessary for the continued function of the sub, meaning that we remove only submissions which violate reddit’s sitewide rules, or our very limited set of rules. Moderating <a href="/r/antinatalism">r/antinatalism</a> is very often an exercise in leaving up content you disagree with strongly.</li> <li>We are less-than-anonymous. Both Amanda and myself (the seniormost mods) intentionally link their online and offline identities. In the past, the moderation team has had weekly Zoom video calls where we discuss relevant matters and coördinate moderation strategy. Whilst we respect that there will be cases where circumstances prevent moderators from revealing their identity in this way, we have a strong preference for moderators who are comfortable attending these calls. (Note: We aren’t sure we’re going to be bringing back the calls, but we’d like the option of doing so.)</li> <li>Engaged and long-term members of the community are particularly encouraged to apply. We will not be selecting moderators based on their flavour of antinatalist philosophy — as long as you enforce the rules objectively, you don’t even have to be an antinatalist to apply! — but a history of active participation on the sub is a positive factor amongst our selection criteria.</li> <li>As our userbase is spread throughout the world, it would be great to have mods in different time zones. We encourage global submissions from moderators — remote time zones are an asset for moderation purposes, not a liability.</li> </ul> <p>If you are interested in becoming a moderator, we’re interested in hearing from you! If you reject that bringing any conscious existence is wrong, and argue that it is only wrong in the case of humans, you have to be able to define (in order to be logically consistent) what it is about humans that justifies that differential treatment (that it is wrong for humans but ok for animals). Ofcourse if you are not able to define the traits the differential treatment is completely arbitrary, thus illogical. But let&#39;s say you do identify the trait/s. Let&#39;s say the trait is intelligence, humans simply are more intelligent than pigs for example. Would it then be ok to bring humans of the level of intelligence of pigs to be brough into existence? Doesn&#39;t seem right, does it? You can go on trying to find traits and it will never really feel quiet right, sooner or later you&#39;ll find out the differential treatment was always arbitrary, imposed by our culture more than anything else. When I feel pain it makes me want to die immediately. That’s why I’ll never have kids so they will never have to experience emotional and physical pain.</p> <p>But most people seem okay with pain and suffering. Many people I’ve spoken to told me they’d love to live as long as they can. They seem to enjoy working out, challenging themselves with obstacles, studying and working hard to make money and achieve goals. I don’t enjoy any of them. While Extinction Rebellion simply wants the issues that face humans to be stopped to allow us to continue existing and having kids, helping ecosystems is a byproduct of helping us.</p> <p>Having children is the single worst thing you can do for the environment, a huge amount of recources are needed for every person and a huge amount of waste is produced, they can also go on to have kids and cause more problems. </p> <p>It is however Extinction Rebellion&#39;s first goal to have a world that is free from ecological issues because that is apparently the only thing that is causing misery in the world.</p> <p>I went home for the weekend, and my sister and her boyfriend are members (her boyfriend is more into it but talks about it less. My sister likes to talk the talk, she was vegan for 4 months and is now semi-vegitarian but talks about veganism a lot, boyfriend is vegan and I&#39;ve never heard him talk about it) and it takes up a lot of her personality.<br/> They&#39;ve been plastering Extinction Rebellion stickers on things around town with her kids, and they gave me some of the stickers. I explained that I don&#39;t agree with the reasoning of the group as a means for having more kids when it seems that one part of the solution is having less, ideally none. My sister said I was wrong because if there were no people there wouldn&#39;t be anyone to appreciate nature (which surprisingly, despite how poor of a reason it is, it&#39;s the best reason my sister has given about anything ever).</p> <p>They&#39;ve been trying to preserve a small patch of woodland, in private land, next to an industrial estate and a busy road where in the wood is so noisy from cars there is no native wildlife. They are trying to incorporate Extinction Rebellion into it, somehow this bit of woodland is vital for us and for our survival and so should be protected. This is MY life, it is MY Right to Die. I am not free until I have the Right to Die.
