I have a set of LED sequential tail lights for my 2018 Ram that I paid good money for. ($650+ USD) Unfortunately after a year, one quit working and there is no warranty on them. What sucked is that I was on a 9,000 mile family trip and was literally the farthest point from home (live in WA and was near the border of MS and AL on the Gulf Coast. Luckily on the trip back, I had a number of people let me know it was out, but never got pulled over for it. I did use hand signals when possible, so that maybe helped.

Of course there are two circuit boards on the tail lights. One handles the input and probably deals with sending the signal to either come on solid "brake lights" or go sequential "for turn signals." Both the turn signal and brake light function do not work. There is a separate array of LEDS for the parking lights, those work just fine and use a different circuit from the truck, into the light.

My troubleshooting consisted of comparing the components from the working passenger side light, to those of the drivers side light. Started at the input/wiring to the light and all checked out good until I got to a single 4 pin voltage regulator. (EDIT: Specs say 3 pin so I think the main solder lug I see is either for heat sink or mounting purposes) The passenger side allowed continuity on multiple pins while the drivers side (problem light) was open. My problem with this, is that I know in order to test this, you must isolate the components, yet I had it installed on the board still.

Its labeled as Q1 and HT7550 on the board. The VR itself says 7550-1 S3K04G6. I couldn't find a direct match but did find a CLOSE one on Mouser.com couple months back but afraid to order it, pay $15 shipping, just to find out it's not the problem.

Can I do anything else to help isolate this? Unfortunately I only have access to a volt meter and my battery in the truck will be my power supply. I have VNA's at work, but that won't help me out in this situation. LOL

IF I cannot figure this out myself, is anyone willing to take a shot at it and repair it for me as a project? I will pay something at least, but if it goes beyond say $50, I'm just gonna toss these...

   submitted by /u/PowerWagon106
[link] [comments]

How to troubleshoot tail lights

<img src="https://preview.redd.it/vqe7mmr6loea1.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=f0f585843b133e65e37f2a63395b7105d939c88f" alt="Looking for a combined 12v and 5v step-up unit like this, but need the 12v outlet to always have priority over 5v outlet. (Just should use another pin than A5 for PWM).

I have two questions here:

- Does that work with a PTC heating element like this https://amzn.eu/d/3JpMJba or a heating foil like this https://amzn.eu/d/3SHoRPT?

- I drive my arduino nano IOT with a single 18650, that is also fine for the thermistor and also for the gate(?) voltage to switch the IRLZ34N, afaik. Am I right? But what about the heating element or MOSFET, do they work with that voltage/ampere too? For the MOSFET I always see 5V at the Gate and 12V for the switching circuit, but can I regulate other voltages too with this MOSFET or what would kind of MOSFET would I need here?

Basically I want a heating element to have constant about 35°C, controlled via arduino nano, PID and PWM due to a thermistor. All that it nicely fits together in a case so it can be attached to the hand or arm. So it should be a all in one light weight solution what I am looking for.

EDIT:

Could I also use such a modul for this purpose? https://amzn.eu/d/iMdZYHu

Like using my arduino nano on the left in the schematic there for PWM and GND and on the right I can also use my 18650 battery shield with 5V? Would that work or do I somehow need to increase those 5V to 12V that the heating element would work?

   submitted by /u/Academic-Grab5397
[link] [comments]

Heating Element with PWM and PID Control

I built a digital clock back in the 70s powered by an AC power source with a diy ac/dc converter. Theres no damage to the pads at all, hell I could almost hot glue it back, because the original solder is still there with grooves where the surface mounted pins were. That being said, I'd rather a more reliable fix, as I want to run this thing as our family HTPC after stripping it down and building a custom wood case.

The old things battery and keyboard are entirely shot now, but the processor, storage, and ram are still perfectly adequate, and exactly the kinds of specs you'd want for a reasonable HTPC, leans more towards the processor (4c8t) but with better-than-integrated graphics, 16gb of ram, and very low power.

Beyond the busted peripherals though, the power socket being disconnected is the only actual problem with the system that I can tell.

As for tools, we don't really do that level of electronics tinkering for the most part. I do have a coil of solder wire lying around, but no iron. Heres my jank redneck-engineering question: Exactly how many curses would I summon on my future bloodline by melting and applying the solder with the tip of a screwdriver heated in an open flame?

I know better than to waste money on a shit soldering iron, but I really don't want to spend any money right now, since I'm trying to make my electronics tinkering pay for itself as much as possible, and I don't have any other reason to use one for the forseeable future. Frankly I'd have already tried the glue method if I didn't have the raw solder lying around.

   submitted by /u/swingittotheleft
[link] [comments]

laptop power connector repair, first time soldering

I want to buy an 8 channel relay board, but am not sure if the PM01 board can drive it and a nodemcu.
