A good 80-90% of time in the office itself before this situation was spent &#39;looking busy&#39; and waiting around for code to test. Now conveniently I can make more productive use of my downtime by playing video games, reading, masturbating, and wondering why I exist...</p> <p>In seriousness I have a number of projects that I plan to work on in this time as well </p> <ul> <li><p>I help run a monthly talks thing as part of the Birmingham(UK) Skeptics in the Pub group and we&#39;re hoping to do some online stuff in it&#39;s place over the duration of this lockdown situation</p></li> <li><p>I have been writing stand-up material for a while and really need to properly knuckle down with it and form a coherent 5-10mins (or more), good opportunity to write some new shit too</p></li> <li><p>I plan to try and do some volunteering for shopping delivery and prescription collection during &#39;work time&#39;</p></li> <li><p>I&#39;m going to de-clutter my home</p></li> <li><p>I&#39;m going to keep up regular running 2-3 times (or more) per week</p></li> </ul> </div><!-- SC_ON --> &#32; The main purpose of this sort of tutoring isn&#39;t to further enrich the students&#39; mastery of the subjects taught in school like math, science, language, history, etc. but to learn the tactics to pass entrance exams to elite high schools and colleges.</p> <p>To me, this sounds like a zero-sum game. If the tutoring indirectly prepared the students to better pass exams by supplementing their knowledge of the subjects being tested, it would still be a net benefit for society even if they&#39;re still fighting for the same # of slots at elite schools. But since the main focus of China&#39;s for-profit tutoring is to teach its students ways to &quot;game the exams&quot; and to fight for the same # of seats at elite universities, the skills taught by these for-profit tutors are not applicable outside of the domain of test taking; the zero-sum nature of this endeavor smells like a bullshit job.</p> <p>What are your thoughts? In this NGO’s working ecosystem needs us to live in the community and doing observation participantoris action - which absolutely need a physical meeting, not zoom meeting. But, we can’t do that in this pandemic era, especially when your country is in the list of covid epicentrum. Everyday is a new day for suffering and we must get ready for condolences news. I don’t know what am I actually do with my job in NGO who concern with indigenous people on different island, hence people surrounding are facing live crisis. </p> <p>Since I don’t satisfy with me, I discover my job as bullshit jobs. As a project engineer grad, a lot of my work was either meaningless (preparing site folders no one used) or doing other people&#39;s meaningless work. We only had a 7 hour work day, but it still felt like forever. </p> <p>I realized that project engineers in my company wasn&#39;t really engineering, the most useful thing you could do was match up schedules of different resources, beyond that there was not much to do apart from reporting expenses. It was less than a days work (out of a month) in a job where you got paid more than the people doing the actual work. I’m not in it beyond saying reinstall and sign out I don’t know what I’m doing. The customers get annoyed when I said I have to forward the issue over and someone will be in touch with them. Even that doesn’t help because the customers get emailed wheat I tell them in the phone. I feel like customers should just be able to only write in because calling doesn’t help. Sometimes I am able to resolve the issue but most of the time it’s just a wing and a prayer. The agency itself has a lot of technical functions, and the office that I am in (with about 50 people) is particularly technical. Aside from (surprisingly few) non-supervisory admin-types, it is mostly (nominally) Software Engineers, Data Scientists, and Systems Engineers maintaining and reporting on a very large database. It&#39;s also worth commenting that there are 2 layers of management inside this 50ish person group, the top layer being quite extraneous and mostly getting in everybody&#39;s way, as we take a lot of marching orders directly from the layer of management above them. Managers are generally not more technically proficient/competent than the people they are managing; some readily admit this and others quite blatantly fake it.</p> <p>Anyway, the office as a whole is useful to the agency (though the value of the agency itself is admittedly questionable). But out of the 50 people in this office there are, at most, 10 people who have the requisite skills to get our work done. That means about 10 people writing the code, maintaining the computer systems, communicating with people outside our office, and answering questions about the data we steward and analyze.</p> <p>And nobody (least of all management) seems to care that there are dozens of people who accomplish nothing. And it isn&#39;t entirely the workers&#39; fault, as many were hired despite lacking any formal qualifications, experience, or skills required for the job (namely the ability to write Java/Python code). The handful of people who are competent don&#39;t have the time or desire to teach/coach their colleagues who lack these skills; teaching somebody how to code is hard, and fixing somebody else&#39;s poorly written code is more trouble than it&#39;s worth, so there isn&#39;t much room to collaborate when skillsets are so mismatched. And I know this isn&#39;t politically incorrect, and I&#39;m sorry to say, but I don&#39;t think that most people are intelligent enough to become <em>effective</em> Software Engineers, which (to me) means the ability to create useful programs without much coaching/help.</p> <p>And really, there is no pressure for the people who can&#39;t code to learn, because there are basically no standards or expectations. We haven&#39;t had a team meeting (in developer circles, a &quot;standup&quot;) about our work in months. Managers either hide in the &quot;leadership&quot; room or walk around and distract their team members, playing office politics or having very unprofessional conversations about their personal lives. The agency has an (effectively) unlimited sick leave policy, and some people call in 2-3 days a week, so they don&#39;t even have to be physically present for 40 hours a week to receive their full pay and benefits.</p> <p>To me, this seems like the natural consequence of lionizing STEM fields, and Software Engineering/Data Science are particularly trendy. Graeber mentions in &quot;Bullshit Jobs&quot; that, often, the social demand for particular jobs is higher than the economic one, and I suspect that is a major force at play here. Diversity is also a big factor, and a lot of our hiring decisions are made (explicitly) on the basis of identity rather than skill; this is a factor considered in promotions and bonuses for hiring managers. The people making hiring decisions are also not technical people, don&#39;t understand what the job entails, and seem to think that a promise to learn Java/Python code has equal value to real experience.</p> <p>So I&#39;m wondering if anyone else, maybe older people who have been in a STEM field for a long time, have noticed an uptick in young people being hired for technical jobs that they lack the skills to perform, and then being allowed to do nothing because they would only be in the way. Mining makes the network look big, which is good in some way against a hypothetical takeover and makes people feel good.</li> <li>The &quot;miner&quot; is a taskmaster. A bigger coin network has a higher &quot;difficulty&quot; to maintain the rate a &quot;block&quot; recording transactions is generated. Doing all the extra work creates extra work for everyone else, including yourself.</li> <li>The &quot;miner&quot; is a box ticker. Since the block generation time stays the same, you are not making anyone&#39;s transaction go faster.</li> <li>The &quot;miner&quot; is a goon. You are racing other miners for a chance at the coin.</li> <li>Finally, The &quot;miner&quot; probably counts as a duct taper too.
