I swear to fucking god the amount of posts that I see that are just "Here's a gadget, here's a video game, here's some jewelry, here's some product placement, now BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY" is fucking insane. None of them are even labelled as ads.

I've blocked and not interested every single one of them but they just keep fucking coming. It's so exhausting. It also makes me sad, because actual independent artists who are just trying to advertise their Etsy are just as fucking annoying when all you see is ads.

I'm just so fucking tired man. Advertising is inescapable. It's everywhere. I wish I could go back to not being able to see it, because constantly being reminded that I am a walking wallet is so fucking existentially draining.

^{A short rant about how developing useless products for the sake of answering the unwarranted desires of overconsumers wastes people's time, which could be spent working on better stuff:}

I work as a product designer in a company which makes medical devices. My supervisor/mentor used to work at a sporting goods company, specializing in skis and snowboards etc. and we often talk about how projects and products come to life.

What most people, who are not in this field, don't realise is just how much time, effort, bureaucracy and money goes into developing a new product. The fact that something is being developed at all is only the result of market demand and marketing. With skis, most of the time, a new model is simply the last year's skis with new graphics on top - meaning the company spends months of work of maybe 20 people developing absolutely nothing new of value. In the current company we are developing a new thermometer - a device which has been iterated on thousands of times in the past few centuries and there's absolutely nothing new we could realistically bring to the market - yet it has to be done because it's allegedly missing in our product line-up/ecosystem. A team of 15 people, including highly skilled mechanical engineers and software developers are going to spent the next few months working on something which does not add any value to the world and is just not needed.

At least we're developing medical devices - imagine the human effort spend bringing completely worthless shit to the market - gag gifts, the 37460th hue of nail polish, pet costumes, movie merchandise and RGB lighting for your gaming PC case...

Imagine what we as humanity could achieve, if all those people's time, knowledge and effort was focused on something of actual value. Instead of answering to the pointless demands of the market, all this effort could be focused on trying to figure out clean energy, waste management and sustainable food production. Perhaps we could have figured out a lot of important stuff by now...

I am in the pre-process of moving, which is when you decide to pack up old stuff and start selling what you bought years ago and do not need anymore.

I am amazed at the amount of stuff I bought since 2011, when I moved in my current house.

I now realize that consuming is an addiction. I also realize that I am borderline hoarder.

I look at old clothes I have kept, always with an excuse such as "oh yeah, when I do yard work, I will need these old shoes and pants..." Except that I don't do yard work.

I have several TV sets from when I had my kids half of the time (yes, I am divorced) and most of it is only worse $100 at the most, since TV sets are still an absolute bargain.

Consumerism is a disease. I have decided to adopt a more ascetic lifestyle.

There is no need to own and consume all of that garbage.

Like: why did I even by a drone for?

Hey, I'm looking for someone who knows where the pipeline is. I mean, I'm honestly discouraged from posting on here, people talk a lot about saving the planet, but do very little to collective do something. Either way, I understand there are in fact people doing good work, yet... seems like I'm just not in the circle.

Where do these piles of "unwanted" clothes go just before they hit the Landfills?
