Hi folks,

If you’ve not met me before, hello! I’m Matt, Community Platform Manager at DigitalOcean. I look after this subreddit in an unofficial capacity on behalf of the wider community around DigitalOcean.

It has recently come to our attention that some folks on this subreddit have been masquerading as DigitalOcean support team members and offering to help folks via DM, often asking them for email addresses and logins etc.

We want to make it very clear that this subreddit is unofficial, and is NOT a support channel that we (DigitalOcean) actively operate or monitor. As such, DigitalOcean staff will never offer you support via DMs on Reddit, nor will we ever ask you for login information anywhere, ever.

If you see anyone pretending to be DigitalOcean staff, asking for login information etc., or have any other concerns, please let us know! You can do so by DM’ing me here on Reddit if you prefer, or you can reach out to DigitalOcean through any of our conventional channels (support ticket or Twitter).

Hosting Mattermost and Business website on Droplet

Im new to DO and honestly any form of sysadmin and was wondering if it would be possible/reasonable to run both Mattermost (personal Mattermost w/ 2 users) and host my low-traffic small business website (wordpress) on the 1 Gig droplet? I want to spin up an instance of Mattermost, but would prefer to move web hosting over if possible in order to save some money

400$ referral for digital ocean

Hello

I'm new to VPS world, today I visited the digital ocean website and it says that I can make an account with 200$ for 2 month if I sign up with a referral link. Someone I know told me that digital ocean also has a 400$ for 12 month referral program. I haven't worked with digital ocean, can someone confirm if this is the case? does digital ocean really creates accounts with 400$ credit for 12 months?

This is surpise me so much about the good one cloud provider

I wanna place python bot to do something on cloud so I heard DO are good top on the list with cheap price so this is first time I use the cloud service
I registerd and recieve free credit. everything work fine and I am happy thinking would continue using it after credit end
after awhile I see I have so many credit left and it gonna expire soon so I try create droplets to max and spam the bot I use(yes, it doesn't need to have more than 1 but I don't wanna waste the credit)
DO ban me for that and lock my account tell me that I'm violate the rules. ok I know I did it wrong so I explain What I did and thinking they will unlock and take away all the credit
They say to unlock the account is unable and push away me to go another cloud service??
ok fine then just unlock account for me to go to delete account cuz it still have credit card info linked but they said unable to?? WTF is this??

Is this some kind of thief organization or something? Is this normal way for cloud service be like?

Can I downsize my droplet to a smaller hard disk?

I know the official documentation say I can't.

It's a bit of a BS explanation though, saying that the disk *may* be smaller than my current data.

I'm currently using less than 20% of my hard disk; if I downsize to half of that, there's still plenty of space available.

Is there any hack around this?

I'm thinking of something like setting up a new droplet with the correct SSD size/RAM/vCPUs, taking a snapshot of my current droplet, and then restore the snapshot on to my new droplet.

Would it work?

Best way to setup Celery w/Redis on DO App Platform?

Am I understanding this correctly? First I have to create a worker which will be another $12, minimum. Then I have to purchase a redis managed db, which is another $15. So in total, it will cost me an additional $27 to run celery with my Django app? This would bring my minimum total to $45/month.

Is this the only way to go about doing this, or am I incurring unnecessary charges?

Once it's set up, how do I call the celery worker from the main app?

Bandwidth Calculator Broken?

I was attempting to see what it would cost in terms of data + compute and I was shocked to see it would cost me $28,000 per month for a single droplet to reduce the droplets running hours from 672 down to 671 per month. Anything under 672 hours is some insane pricing model.

Please tell me that's not how it's supposed to be.

Firewall: how to whitelist an App so it can connect to a Droplet?

How do I find out what the app's IP address is so I can use it in a firewall rule?

How to host a website together with its database in a single droplet?

Hi guys, newbie here.

I plan to host a Next.js image posting website (like Pinterest), may I know is it possible to put the frontend data and the database together in a single droplet?

I saw one of the General Purpose droplet plans as such:

RAM: 16 GiB

CPU: 4vCPUs

Transfer: 5,000 GiB

SSD: 50 GiB

monthly cost: $126.00

Since there are 50 gb SSD storage provided in this plan, is it I can use it to host the website and the database together? As the plan come with 50gb storage, I assume I can make use of it for the database, not sure whether my thinking is correct? And how hard to achieve it?

For the image uploaded by the user, I plan to use the Amazon S3 bucket as file storage to keep those images.

Or is there any better low cost practice for this kind of website?

As I just started this project as my side project and have to bear all the cost myself, I hope to minimize the spending as low as possible until it scale up in the future..

How do you setup /.well-known/pki-validation on App Platform?

I'm utilizing the SSL automatically generated by the App platform, but I believe I need to set up a /.well-known/pki-validation link to integrate Stripe payments. I can't find anything in the docs about how to do this. Is this already set up, or do I need to do it on my own?

What is the name of the file supposed to be, and do I just put my CA in it?

Do I need to redo this every time I'm given a new SSL?

Is App Platform good?

I want to spin up a REST Server that builds via Github Actions and was thinking of using DO Droplets, App Platform or Heroku.

I've read a lot of pushback on the app platform. Stating the build times and terrible and (unacceptably from me) the performance is horrid. However, most of the reviews are 1-2 years old, so I'm wondering what is the latest consensus?

Is it better to use Heroku? Or perhaps just spin a droplet?

DigitalOcean: All configured authentication methods failed

Has anyone come across this issue and how did you fix it?

Here's what I've tried so far:

Reverted to a back up from 7 days ago, which was working
Also reverted to a snapshot from a week ago
Power cycled, still nothing
Turned off and turned on

Still nothing...

Fraudulent charges

I woke up today to my Amex app pinging me with 3 -$1 charges to DigitalOcean.com I’ve never heard of this til today and found it was a cloud service, and found this subreddit. Is DO linked to any other common service?

I’ve disputed the charges, cancelled the card in fear of it being compromised and requested a new one.

Just seeing if anyone has had similar charges or any services it might be linked to because I’m clueless.

I have several droplets currently running Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS that are mainly used to host small WordPress sites. I'd like to soon upgrade to 22.04 is there an easy way to clone a droplet right in the Digital Ocean dashboard to use as a staging/test environment or do I have to manually replicate each droplet/site?

I have been facing a weird issue. I was running two Python scripts 24x7, and when I added two more it started giving the error
