Asahi Linux: Size of existing partition error

I do not understand why this error pops up when installing Asahi Linux. As of some information, this is macOS Ventur, OS Version 13.1, memory 8 GB and having 70GB of free space. I saw couple of video online someone typed "min" and started installing as 60 GB of Asahi Linux, but seems like that is not what it is happening in my end.

I've got the 2021 14" pro with the extra gpu driver installed. I've been trying to get Wayland working but both Gnome and KDE crash and kick me back at the login screen when Wayland is selected. x11 Works fine. Anyone else having this issue?

Wayland WM’s openGL versions

Hey everyone. I currently am using hyprland because i really love the look of it, and i also much prefer a tiling window manager, or a window manager i can selectively tile.

Hyprland works fine, but it has to use the software renderer so i am not getting the benefit of the new GPU driver. I am wondering if anyone knows which tiling window managers can actually use the current GPU driver since it only implements openGL 2.0 and parts of 2.1. Does sway support this? Or is weston the only compositor that can take advantage of the current driver? I know KDE plasma works, but like i said i prefer a tiling, or selectively tiling window manager. Any pointers on how to figure out which ones support the earlier openGL versions would be appreciated! I looked through the sway wiki but couldnt find anything.

I am trying to install ubuntu or fedora from https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/SW:Alternative-Distros I couldn't complete the installation both got stuck in this step :

What can I do? I have to do course assignments of a course on Operating systems. Working in linux kernel. I had tried to run the commands given for Ubuntu, it didn't work on that so I decided to install Ubuntu. Got stuck and tried to install fedora. Got stuck again. Can I do anything else apart from using VM or another machine? like if there is some option of ubuntu via USB or anything?? I just want to do my assignments in Linux (I am a CS Major & a real noob in distros other than Ubuntu) Please help

Can I enable FileVault on the Asahi Linux volume group

perf on M2 Macbook Pro

Has anyone had any luck running perf on the M2 Macbook Pro? I've tried running the following (based on the instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AsahiLinux/comments/vr27bz/pmu_perf_counters_usable_on_asahi_or_inside_linux/), but I don't get any useful output. Looking at the driver in the kernel source code, it seems like it probably supports the M2, but maybe it hasn't been tested all that much. Running perf with sudo doesn't help either.

Given the recent release of the updated MacBooks Pro, is there any sense of how well they will support AsahiLinux (or rather how much work will be necessary to make it work similarly as on the prior ones)? I'm not an expert, so although to me it sounded like there weren't too many substantial updates, I can't quite tell...

Screen sharing and video calls. No native Zoom client for aarch64. What about the other common platforms?

Hi Folks,

Just thought I'd create this thread to share my experience. Perhaps others can chime in and we can track what videoconferencing and screensharing platforms work, etc.

I haven't yet tried the PWA chrome zoom client. I have had poor experience with it before in chrome OS. However the M1 has quite a bit more horsepower than the ARM tablet I was using. Has anyone tried using it?

Finally, not sure the camera support work has started yet. Perhaps some folks are using a usb webcam or phone via usb in the meantime.

If anyone can share those details perhaps it could help those who are trying to use Ashai full time as their computing platform. I have been suprised how well my USB / BLUETOOTH headset has worked in ASAHI, and to some degree that's more important than the on board audio...

Blurry text in Firefox

So after i installed the GPU driver and settled on 150% scale, everything is super duper blurry. Now i hate the 200% scale because everything is just too big for me and i need more space i was starting to wonder if there is a way to make the ui smaller without having blurry text. If that is possible let me know how!

16k page size complications, Chrome, Android, etc

Hi,

Just wondering regarding the 16k page size complications. Is there any reference available that can describe how software is built for page sizes?

Can we understand what is holding back building software for 16k page size?

What makes it difficult to build software for 16k page sizes? Has anyone made a short summary of why this isn't trivial?

Then with knowledge perhaps we will solve the 16k page crisis, or admit defeat...

Some software that comes to mind is Chromium / Chrome , perhaps Waydroid, etc.

Disabling Apple Silicon GPU Drivers + Swapping Ctrl/Cmd

Hi,

This is probably not a common request, but I'm looking for a way to disable the Apple Silicon Drivers on Asahi Linux. I normally try to use macOS, but find that it gives me very bad eye strain. Other users who have similar eye symptoms have mentioned that Asahi Linux has caused less eye strain, which may be due to the differences in GPU behavior. Is there a way to verify that I've disabled those drivers?

Also, I'm trying to swap the Ctrl + Cmd keys, but can't seem to find a way to do that.

When I try

# echo "1" > /sys/module/hid_apple/parameters/swap_opt_cmd

I get:

When I try:

echo 'options hid-apple swap_fn_leftctrl=1' > /etc/modprobe.d/keyboard.conf

I get:

I'd really appreciate if anyone could provide some assistance on these issues. Thank you very much.

EDIT: Also, I'm having an issue with Klipper. When I press Cmd+V, I get the clipboard menu with all of the previous text I've copied, but can't seem to access any of it. Clicking on the text or hitting Return just closes Klipper and doesn't paste anything. The only way I can copy/paste is by right clicking, hitting copy, then repeating for paste. Is there something I'm doing incorrectly here?

Mac Studio Asahi install boots to a black screen

I installed Asahi using the alpha installer (here) on an M1 Mac Studio. The installation was easy, but when booting into the new system, nothing appears except a black screen. I may have misunderstood that Mac Studios weren't supported yet, though I read the July post about support for the Mac Studio. Please let me know if this is not supported yet or if I have to use another version/config of the installer (I used default no expert mode).

My monitor is the Mac Studio Display, if that helps.

Installing GNOME and related questions

My favorite distro is fedora, but I prefer staying on the official project since Asahi is still in Alpha. Therefore I will use arch linux, but I want to install GNOME. I have a couple of questions.

Can I just use these commands:

sudo pacman -S gnome

sudo systemctl enable gdm

sudo reboot

Can I safely uninstall KDE plasma and not run into trouble with feature updates from Asahi? Or is it safer if I leave KDE plasma installed but use GNOME instead?
